AT&T Expanding Wireless Coverage in Alabama; Investing More Than $29 Million This Year In The State's Wireless Network
2nd August, 2007

AT&T (NYSE: T) has announced an investment of more than $29 million in the Alabama wireless network in 2007. This brings AT&T's three-year investment in Alabama to nearly $300 million. This year's investment includes the addition of new cell sites, expanded wireless broadband service (3G) and approximately 1,000 new radios added to all cell sites throughout the state. It also includes new hardware cabinets, power amplifiers, additional antenna transmission lines and antennas at more than 200 cell sites.

The 2007 enhancements focus primarily on expanding the network's voice capacity and enhancing the EDGE Data network, which is providing increased download speeds for consumers. The expansion of the voice and data network gives the company additional bandwidth to support its growing customer base and increased network voice and data usage.

AT&T also will add cell sites in 2007 to enhance wireless coverage for its customers. Areas include: In Montgomery, south of the city along Highway 231; north of Montgomery along Highway 63 -- between Eclectic and Alexander City and east of Selma; in northwestern Escambia County (Fla.) along Highway 97; and in the Birmingham area, at Interstate 65 and U.S. Highway 31.

Last year, AT&T built new cell sites in Alabama to increase coverage, added 58 portable generators in hurricane-prone areas and deployed wireless broadband services in Birmingham. The Alabama network spans Alabama and northwestern Florida (from Destin to Pensacola).

AT&T has delivered dramatic change in Alabama -- a direct result of the company's continuing efforts to expand and enhance its network operations and the synergies that come from being part of the world's largest communications company. Through the introduction of a blazing-fast 3G network in Birmingham, customers now have access to DSL-type speeds for their laptops and access to the latest entertainment, news and weather programming through AT&T Video and AT&T Music via their handset. Later this year, AT&T plans to roll out its wireless broadband network in Huntsville, and that will give more consumers in the state access to these advanced services.

"We are accelerating the changes that our customers see and experience in Alabama, and that's as exciting for the company as it is for customers and employees," said Joe Larussa, AT&T's vice president/general manager for wireless operations in the Gulf States region. "Our goal is to ensure that AT&T customers have the very best wireless experience possible -- which includes unmatched coverage and quality of service. We have been working hard for many years to enhance service for our customers and to provide the best-value calling plans and cutting-edge wireless devices."

"The versatility of our network is unsurpassed," Larussa said. "Since our network is based on the GSM standard, AT&T customers can browse the Web and perform other data functions in more than 130 countries and can make phone calls in more than 190 countries and territories."

AT&T diligently monitors the quality and coverage of its network. In addition to third-party vendors that assess the company's network performance, AT&T wireless network engineers constantly monitor the network and drive tens of thousands of miles of highway across Alabama and northwestern Florida each year to ensure that the network is operating at peak efficiency.

"We're off to a great start already, and the future promises to be very exciting for Alabama," said Larussa.
